Cortical control of saccades
-
Pierrot-Deseilligny C, Rivaud S, Gaymard B, Müri R, Vermersch AI: Cortical control of saccades [Review]. Ann Neurol 1995, 37:557-567. These authors reviewed human and non-human primate studies to provide a scheme for the cortical localization of saccades. They suggested that three cortical areas, the FEF, SEF and the parietal eyes are capable of triggering saccades, whereas the prefrontal cortex and inferior parietal lobe are involved in planning of saccades to remembered locations and visuospatial integration, respectively.

Location and function of the human frontal eye-field: A selective review
-
Paus T: Location and function of the human frontal eye-field: a selective review. Neuropsychologia 1996, 34:475-483. The author reviewed a decade of published data on saccades using PET, and localized the generator of saccades, the FEF, into two anatomical and functional components. Anatomically, the FEF was located laterally in the vicinity of the PreCS, within the depth of the caudal most portion of the superior frontal sulcus, or both. The FEF was not in Brodmann's area 8, which in humans is commonly thought of as the location of the FEF. Functionally, large amplitude saccades were associated with activation in the PreCS, but small amplitude saccades with the superior frontal sulcus.

Functional anatomy of a prelearned sequence of horizontal saccades in humans
-
Petit L, Orssaud C, Tzourioi N, Crivello F, Berthoz A, Mazoyer B: Functional anatomy of a prelearned sequence of horizontal saccades in humans. J Neurosci 1996, 16:3714-3726. Using PET, the authors studied self-paced saccades (voluntary saccades) in darkness and memorized sequences of saccades compared with fixation. Using the self-paced saccade task, they showed increased activation in the FEF (precentral sulcus) and cingulate gyrus. Sequencing of saccades to memorized targets resulted in increased activation in both intraparietal and superior frontal sulci as well as in the SEF, PEF, and cingulate gyrus.

Darby DG, Nobre AC, Thangaraj V, Edelman R, Mesulam M, Warach S: Cortical activation in the human brain during lateral saccades using EPISTAR functional magnetic resonance imaging. Neuroimage 1996, 3:53-62. The authors were the first to use fMRI techniques to localize the FEF and SEF in humans.
