Blood 1995, 86:3970-3978. Addresses the question whether stem cell toxic chemotherapy depletes hematopoietic progenitor cells. Results suggest that this may be more of a problem for PBSCs than bone marrow, and cautions that if PBSC collection is planned it should be performed before excessive exposure to these agents.

Eradication of PCR detectable chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells is associated with improved outcome after bone marrow transplantation

Provan D, Zwicky C, Bartlett-Pandite L, Maddocks A, Corradini P, Soiffer R, Ritz J, Nadler LM, Gribben JG: Eradication of PCR detectable chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells is associated with improved outcome after bone marrow transplantation. Blood 1996, 88:2228-2235. Assesses the potential of high-dose therapy and allogeneic or autologous BMT to eradicate PCR-detectable minimal residual disease. Those patients with persistence of disease after high-dose therapy invariably relapsed. Suggests that PCR-detectable disease may have to be eradicated for cure.
