A pseudocapsule surrounding a renal cell carcinoma is a pathologic feature seen frequently in the early stages of the disease and might be an indication that simple enucleation or partial nephrectomy is indicated. T2-weighted MRI is the most sensitive technique for showing this pseudocapsule.

AJR Am J Roentgenol 1996, 166:835-843. Interesting study in 15 hypertensive patients with renal artery stenoses with sequential gadolinium-enhanced MRI after captopril administration. The results show that this functional test can demonstrate captopril-induced changes of tubular and excretory phases on the side of renal artery stenoses in some of the patients with confirmed disease.

AJR Am J Roentgenol 1996, 166:971-981. Prospective study of the abdominal aorta, renal and other visceral arteries in 63 consecutive patients using 2D TOF and ultrafast 3D spoiled GR MRA. In combination, both methods accurately identified and graded all (51 of 51) renal, coeliac, superior mesenteric, and inferior mesenteric artery stenoses or occlusions.

Prospective study in 75 hypertensive patients for main renal artery stenosis using phase-contrast cine MRA. This technique has a high degree of accuracy and a high negative predictive value for the presence of renal artery stenoses and may be a good screening technique for renovascular hypertension.

Doppler sonography and MRI were compared in the differential diagnosis of ATN from transplant rejection in 24 patients with delayed kidney function after renal transplantation. The results suggest that MRI seems to be a sensitive, non-invasive diagnostic tool to differentiate ATN from transplant rejection in the critical early postoperative period.
