By extending the study to include women, and an outpatient sample, the high level of predictability previously demonstrated was corroborated.

This is only the second study investigating alcoholism and premature parental loss. It is the first on women and offers insights into the processes which determine a pathway into alcoholism.

This is probably the first study on adopted female drug users. The authors demonstrated that a common pathway leading from positive genetic background to drug abuse is strongly affected by parental factors in the environment. This offers a point for preventive intervention.

Am J Psychiatry 1996, 153:74-82. This rigorous study explored the relationship between eating disorders and alcoholism in men and women. Bulimia, but not anorexia, occurred at a greater than expected rate. It was emphasised that both eating disorders were relatively rare, and there was no evidence of strong familial crossover between alcoholism and eating disorders,

    • Swift W, Copeland J, Hall W: Characteristics of women with alcohol and other drug problems: findings of an Australian national survey. Addiction 1996, 91:114-115. This Australian study (along with [19]) reported on the characteristics and treatment needs of 267 women attending a range of substance abuse treatment agencies. For the first time, the experiences of this group are examined and assessed with a view to informing policy regarding the delivery of a spectrum appropriate services matched both to the special needs of women and to the heterogeneity of needs.

    • Life-time problem drinking and psychiatric comorbidity among Ontario women
    • Ross H, Shirley M: Life-time problem drinking and psychiatric comorbidity among Ontario women. Addiction 1997,92:183-196. This excellent community study focused on problem drinking and psychiatric comorbidity. The authors examined women (non-problem drinkers and problem drinkers) with and without psychiatric disorders. Overall, psychiatric comorbidity was associated with greater severity of problem drinking. This had implications for greater mental health service utilisation, including substance misuse services. This profile should raise awareness and emphasise the need to enhance training for mental health service providers in identification and intervention so that opportunities are consolidated.
