Cognitive therapy and recovery from acute psychosis: A controlled trial. I. Impact on psychotic symptoms
-
Drury V, Birchwood M, Cochrane R. Macmillan M: Cognitive therapy and recovery from acute psychosis: a controlled trial. I. Impact on psychotic symptoms. Br J Psychiatry 1996, 169:593-601. Despite the overenthusiastic interpretation of the modest results by the authors. this study provides very important evidence of how cognitive therapy may be combined with medication to benefit a group of patients who have not previously been regarded as good candidates for psychotherapy.

Compliance therapy in psychotic patients: A randomized controlled trial
-
Kemp R, Hayward P, Applewhaithe G, Everitt B, David A: Compliance therapy in psychotic patients: a randomized controlled trial. BMJ 1996, 312:345-349. A small but pragmatic study that suggests that a brief course of cognitive therapy may improve treatment compliance and, therefore, outcome for acutely ill patients. This work has obvious implications for the interventions made by mental health professionals, particularly community psychiatric nurses and case managers.

Four-year outcome for cognitive behavioural treatment of residual symptoms in major depression
-
Fava G, Grandi S, Zielezny, Rafanelli C, Canestrari R: Four-year outcome for cognitive behavioural treatment of residual symptoms in major depression. Am J Psychiatry 1996, 153:945-947. This paper is important for two reasons. It highlights the long-term benefits of cognitive therapy in preventing depressive relapse even after the course of therapy has ended and it reminds clinicians that pharmacotherapy can only prevent relapse if people remain permanently on treatment.

A preliminary study of the relationship between personality, cognitive vulnerability, symptom profile and outcome in major depression
-
Scott J, House R, Harrington J, Ferner I: A preliminary study of the relationship between personality, cognitive vulnerability, symptom profile and outcome in major depression. J Nerv Mental Dis 1996, 168: 503-505. This small study is interesting as it suggests that in nonpsychotic depression, individuals with biological vulnerability (as measured by hypercortisolaemia) and cognitive vulnerability (as defined by poor problem-solving skills) to depression may be independent. The researchers suggest that this information may be used to determine whether patients may benefit from pharmacotherapy or cognitive therapy.

The Nottingham study of neurotic disorders: Influence of cognitive therapists on outcome
-
Kingdon D, Tyrer P, Seivewright N, Ferguson B, Murphy S: The Nottingham study of neurotic disorders: influence of cognitive therapists on outcome. Br J Psychiatry 1996, 169:93-97. A study that helps put the rather disappointing performance of cognitive therapy in the earlier outcome studies from this project in context. The study reinforces the need to monitor quality of all treatments, whether psychological or pharmacological in controlled treatment trials.
