This report documents a series of 42 patients with midgut carcinoid tumors, metastatic to the liver treated with a uniform approach of sequential surgical resection chemoembolization and alpha interferon. The series identifies embolization and interferon as effective palliative treatments for carcinoid symptoms. The report demonstrates an objective radiographic response and biochemical response rate for tumor embolization.

Cancer 1996, 77:402-408. This thorough report documents the efforts of the Italian Medical Oncology Cooperative group in using octreotide in neuroendocrine tumors in a prospective phase II protocol. End points were symptomatic control, mild chemical response, and objective radiographic tumor response. Two doses of octreotide were utilized and although symptomatic biochemical responses were documented in the 75% range, objective tumor response was minimal. This paper continues to document the efficacy of octreotide in the palliation of carcinoid syndrome.
