Differences in outcome were significant and important and the reasons for this are considered.

Multiple-family groups and psychoeducation in the treatment of schizophrenia
-
McFarlane W, Lukens E, Link B, Dushay R, Deakins S, Newmark M, Dunne E, Horen B, Toran J: Multiple-family groups and psychoeducation in the treatment of schizophrenia. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1995, 52:679-687. A RCT involving 172 patients with DSMIII-R schizophrenic disorders assigned to one of two family psycho-education models. 49% of multi-family group had not relapsed at 24 months compared with 39% of single-family group. Both treatment groups demonstrated high levels of treatment compliance, significantly reduced psychiatric symptoms, and improved employment outcome over two years. The multiple family group interventions tended to be most successful with those subjects with high levels of psychiatric symptoms at discharge.

Compllance therapy in psychotic patients: Randomised controlled trial
-
Kemp R, Hayward P, Applethwaite G, Everitt B, David A: Compllance therapy In psychotic patients: randomised controlled trial. BMJ 1996, 312:345 349. 47 subjects with schizophrenia-related disorders participated in this RCT reporting significant improvements In medication compliance, attitudes to drug treatment and insight, both post intervention and at six month follow-up, and with some tendency to improved global functioning at six months. This study is potentially very important, however the exclusion rate was some what high, raising questions of generalisability. The brief nature of the therapy, has important economic implications, although replication would be useful with other contrast interventions.

A Multi-faceted intervention to improve treatment of depression in primary care
-
Katon W, Robinson P, Von Korff M, Lin E, Bush T, Ludman E, Simon G, Walker E: A Multi-faceted intervention to improve treatment of depression in primary care. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1996, 53:924 932. A comprehensive treatment programme for utilisation in depression in primary care was developed, and incorporated a 125 page manual on cognitive-behavioural skills to combat depression, and counselling for medication compliance. Those subjects participating in the intervention were more likely to have improved medication compliance at 4 months follow-up, to be more satisfied with treatment, and the major depression group were more likely to have improved clinical outcome, with unclear results in the minor depression intervention group.

Four-year outcome for cognitive-behavioural treatment of residual symptoms in major depression
-
Fava GA, Grandi S, Zielezny M, Rafanelli C, Canestrari R: Four-year outcome for cognitive-behavioural treatment of residual symptoms In major depression. Am J Psychiatry 1996, 153:945 947. Relapse rates for subjects with residual symptoms of depressive disorder, initially successfully treated with pharmocological agents, was 35% in a 10 session CBT intervention group, and 70% in a 10 session clinical management group. This study has an excellent design, and a high standard of treatment integrity, although group numbers were small.
