Clin Infect Dis 1996, 22:824-826. A serosurvey of 396 healthcare workers in the southwestern USA, of whom 67% had self-reported exposure to HPS patients or their body fluids. None of the workers had IgM or IgG antibodies to SNV even though 27% reported some symptoms of illness. The study indicates that transmission is unlikely in healthcare settings.

-
Vitek CR, Ksiazek TG, Peters CJ, Robert F, Breiman RF: Evidence against infection with hantaviruses among forest and park workers in the southwestern United States. Clin Infect Dis 1996, 23:283-285. A serosurvey of 140 workers with occupations likely to lead to exposure to hantavirus was conducted. Of those, 89 had repeated exposures to rodents, their feces and nests. None of the individuals were seropositive to SNV indicating that risk in these occupational settings was low.

Inhibition of bunyaviruses, phleboviruses, and hantaviruses by human MxA protein
-
Frese M, Kochs G, Feldmann H, Hertkorn C, Haller O: Inhibition of bunyaviruses, phleboviruses, and hantaviruses by human MxA protein. J Virol 1996, 70:915-923. Analysis shows that MxA protein inhibits replication of Hantaan virus in Vero cells early in the virus replication cycle. It has a similar effect on Puumala virus but it is noted in the discussion section that MxA in monocytes does not inhibit Puumala virus S segment replication.

Kidney Int 1996, 49: 217-221. In 74 adult patients with nephropathia epidemica there was an increased prevalence of individuals with B8 and DRB1*0301 haplotypes among those with the most severe disease. The workers were able to rule out other predisposing illnesses for the observations, and suggest that disease severity may be affected by human genetic background.
