J Clin Oncol 1996, 14:2206-2216. A prospective study that elucidates the efficacy of using a single course of high-dose cytarabine consolidative therapy as an in vivo purging method in 60 adult patients with acute myelogenous leukemia in first complete remission prior to marrow collection in preparation for autologous transplantation. Forty-four patients were evaluable. The results demonstrated an increased disease-free survival rate in these patients, comparable to that achieved with allogeneic transplantation.

Reports promising clinical results utilizing di-N-butyl phthalate as an in vitro purging agent in 14 patients with acute myelogenous leukemia in first complete remission who underwent autologous bone marrow transplantation. Blood 1996, 88:731-741. Summarizes the results of using synthetic antisense oligodeoxynucleotides, introduced into cells by electroporation, as potential agents to suppress gene products (c-myc protein) associated with specific malignancies. The suppression of these targeted proteins resulted in cell death in different malignant cell lines in vitro. The data suggest that there may be clinical applicability for this method in bone marrow purging in vitro.
