    • The absence of any overprint in calcite by the contemporaneous stress field and Mesozoic extension in the west indicates that calcite strain-hardens once it twins. Moreover, carbonates in other tectonic provinces of North America show distinctly different patterns, unrelated to either Appalachian-Ouachita or Sevier stresses (4).
