Western versus Asian types of multiple sclerosis: Two immunogenetically and clinically distinct patient groups
-
Kira J, Kanai T, Nishimura Y, Yamasaki K, Matsushita S, Kawano Y, Hasuo K, Tobimatsu S, Kobayashi T: Western versus Asian types of multiple sclerosis: two immunogenetically and clinically distinct patient groups. Ann Neurol 1996, 40:569-574. Based on the natural history of the disease and magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spinal cord, a group of Japanese patients were classified as having 'Western type' or 'Asian type' MS. HLA-DRB1*1501 haplotype was shown to be associated with Western type MS but not with Asian type MS. These findings suggest that the genetic background influenced the clinical pattern of MS.
