Light emission has been observed upon dissolution (generally in water) of solid samples previously exposed to ionizing radiation ("lyoluminescence"): G. T. Reynolds, J. Luminescence 1992, 54, 43. However, the phenomenon reported by Balch et al. is a result of excitation of a sample with lower energy (near-visible light).
