14. 1-Pt samples were mixed with boron nitride prior to EXAFS measurements to ensure a suitable edge jump of between 1 and 3. Spectra were acquired at room temperature in transmission by using thin aluminum cells equipped with Kapton windows.
15. Background-subtracted EXAFS data were obtained by using the program PAXAS (N. Binsted, PAXAS - programme for the analysis of X-ray absorption spectra, University of Southampton). A second-order polynomial was used in the pre-edge background subtraction, and the post-edge background was subtracted by fitting this region with coupled polynomials of the order 7 or 8 to remove low-frequency contributions.
