    • The enantiomeric excesses of (R)-5b-d and (S)-4b-d and the optical purities of (R)-5a and (S)-4a were estimated as follows: (R)-4a-d were hydrolyzed to (R)-5a-d under alkaline conditions, and then (R)- and (S)-5b-d were converted to the corresponding N-phenyl-carbamates; which were subjected to HPLC analyses (column, Chiralcel OD, hexane/2-propanol/isopropylamine (80/20/0.1 by volume); flow rate, 1.5 ml/min; detection, 254 run). Optical purities of (R)-5a and (S)-4a were estimated by comparison of their specific rotations with those of (R)-5a and (R)-4a, which were prepared from optically pure (R)-3-hydroxypyrrolidine.
