    • The reciprocal space equivalent of the Wang direct space boundary determination method as coded in PHASES was independently derived, both in our laboratory and in the Westbrook laboratory in 1983 almost immediately after the direct space formalism was proposed. A joint paper from the two laboratories was submitted to Acta Crystallographica in 1984, but was rejected as a reviewer did not believe solvent flattening was useful anyway, and therefore saw no reason to speed up the calculation! Three years later a similar derivation, again independently developed, finally was published by A. G. W. Leslie, Acta Crystallogr. A43, 134 (1987). The algorithm employed in PHASES differs from that of Leslie only by a constant multiplicative factor equal to the sphere volume; thus the results are identical apart from scale.
