Arch Ophthalmol 1996, 98:741-756. This article reports the data from a large clinical trial of patients with both type I and II diabetes. The association of retinal hard exudate with elevated serum lipid levels is demonstrated. The results of these analyses also suggest the importance of lowering elevated levels of serum lipid for maintaining good vision in persons with diabetic retinopathy.

This article shows the interesting retinal findings assocated with extreme elevations of serum lipids, namely triglycerides. The association of serum lipids to retinal hard exudate is evident in this small case series.

Ophthalmology 1991, 98:1261-1265. This is a population-based study of persons with diabetes mellitus. The data from this report support the importance of the association of serum lipids to retinal hard exudate.
