    • Rabinbach notes that Freud was profoundly influenced in his conceptual model by a pervasive 19th century model of energy in which "The powerful and protean world of work, production, and performance is set against the decrescent order of fatigue, exhaustion, and decline. . . . The metapsychology of the early Freud was influenced by his teacher, the physiologist Ernst Brücke . . . later . . . Freud introduced the idea that the human organism resists the excess expenditure of energy and strives toward the elimination of tension, not unlike the principle of inertia. In his commitment to the energy model, Freud's theory may represent the apotheosis of nineteenth-century modernity as well as the beginning of its twentieth-century abandonment and dissolution."

    • DSM is the acronym for the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. The first two editions of 1952 and 1968 were extraordinarily revised to DSM-III in 1980. All of the diagnoses in psychiatry were defined operationally rendering them less subject to opinion and bias; specific criteria were outlined for the first time for any medical specialty. This was revised to DSM-IIIR in 1987 and a fourth edition appeared in 1994 (DSM-IV).

    • There is debate about the beginning of Harvey's insight. 1603 is an early estimate. Harvey gave a series of lectures on anatomy every year for a decade prior to his landmark book and in his notes may have indicated that he presented the circulation idea to these audiences. His bad handwriting and the fact that he paid little attention to detail makes it difficult to reconstruct such intellectual matters accurately (his magnum opus, De Cordu Mortis was riddled with "typos").
