Ann Surg 1994, 219:18-24. Of 148 patients reviewed retrospectively, stratification into greater or less than 6-month survival allowed identification of prognostic criteria. Optimal palliation was considered to be endoscopic endoprosthesis for patients likely to survive less than 6 months and surgical drainage for those likely to survive longer.

Of 25 patients undergoing operation for potentially resectable hepato-biliary malignancy, additional information leading to a change in the surgical approach was obtained from laparoscopic ultrasonography in 20. The commonest indication was metastases from colorectal tumours. A good argument is made for using this modality in the evaluation of liver tumours, although there was no advantage in pancreatic tumours which were evaluated by laparoscopy alone.
