This article describes experiments combining immunoelectron microscopy and measurements of water transport in isolated perfused collecting ducts, demonstrating that vasopressin regulates collecting duct water permeability by triggering reversible trafficking of the aquaporin-2 water channel to the apical plasma membrane of collecting duct principal cells. Thus, the shuttle mechanism originally proposed by Wade et al, [11] was validated.
