During the conversion of the azido-tosylate 15 to the aziridine 16, the cyclization step takes place more easily with the β-anomer due to steric interactions between the tosyl and the bulky silyl groups when the latter lies in the α face. This results in different α:β ratio (2:3 for compound 15 then 3:7 for the aziridine 16), the β-anomer being formed in major quantity.
