Br J Obstet Gynaecol 1996, 103:142-149. A study with an average follow-up of 2.8 years in which women randomized to hysterectomy reported higher rates of satisfaction and significantly less pain than those treated hysteroscopically. Cumulative probability at 2 years of a repeat resection was 12% and that of hysterectomy was 16%.

The Medical Research Council randomized trial of endometrial resection versus hysterectomy in the management of menorrhagia
-
O'Connor H, Broadbent JAM, Magos AL, McPherson K: The Medical •• Research Council randomized trial of endometrial resection versus hysterectomy in the management of menorrhagia. Lancet 1997, 349:897-901. This multicentre trial of women randomized to TCRE or hysterectomy confirmed the shorter operative time, reduced complications and faster recovery after TCRE, with a shorter time to return to domestic activities and work and to resume sexual relations. Further surgery was required by 21.5% of women after TCRE and by 5.4% after hysterectomy. TCRE and hysterectomy had equally positive effects on psychosocial well-being.
