The authors postulate the existence of different subtypes of trabecular meshwork cells, including one that may have smooth muscle-type activity. They showed that TGF-β1 induces the formation of smooth muscle actin in TM cells and may differentiate them into this smooth muscle subtype.

Parshley DE, Bradley JMB, Fisk A, Hadaegh A, Samples JR, Van Buskirk EM, Acott TS: Laser trabeculoplasty induces stromelysin expression by trabecular juxtacanalicular cells. Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 1996, 37:795-804. Stromelysin levels and synthesis are elevated at 8 and 24 hours after laser trabeculoplasty in anterior segment cultures. This change was most evident in the juxtacanalicular and insertion regions of the trabecular meshwork.

Cytoskeletal changes in cultured human glaucoma trabecular meshwork cells
-
Clark AF. Miggans ST, Wilson K, Browder S, McCartney MD: Cytoskeletal changes in cultured human glaucoma trabecular meshwork cells. J Glaucoma 1995, 4:183-188. The production of cross-linked actin networks was increased in trabecular cells treated with dexamethasone. Three of four eyes from patients with primary openangle glaucoma also showed increased cross-linked actin networks.

Clark AF, Lane D, Wilson K, Miggans ST, McCartney MD: Inhibition of dexamethasone-induced cytoskeletal changes in cultured human trabecular meshwork cells by tetrahydrocortisol. Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 1996, 37:805-813. The dexamethasone-induced increase in cross-linked actin networks in trabecular cells is inhibited by the glucocorticoid tetrahydrocortisol in a dose-dependent manner.

Dexamethasone inhibits trabecular cell retraction
-
O'Brien ET, Perkins SL, Roberts BC, Epstein DL: Dexamethasone inhibits trabecular cell retraction. Exp Eye Res 1996, 62:675-688. Treatment with dexamethasone inhibits the outflow-enhancing effects of ECA and EGTA but not cytochalasin B. The authors hypothesize that this is because cytochalasin B exerts its effects directly on the cell junction, whereas ECA and EGTA act by indirect messengers.

Na-K-Cl cotransport regulates intracellular volume and monolayer permeability of trabecular meshwork cells
-
O'Donnell ME, Brandt JD, Curry FE: Na-K-Cl cotransport regulates intracellular volume and monolayer permeability of trabecular meshwork cells. Am J Physiol 1995, 2678:C1067-1074. This study is designed to evaluate the Na-K-Cl cotransporter system in TM cells. TM cells exhibited cotransport activity, which was inhibited by bumetanide and ethacrynic acid, as well as being modulated by a number of hormones and neurotransmitters. Stimulation of the cotransporter increases cell volume, whereas inhibition decreases cell volume. Hypertonicity-induced cell shrinkage increases TM cell monolayer permeability.

Indomethacin and epinephrine effects on outflow facility and cyclic adenosine monophosphate formation in monkeys
-
Crawford KS, Gange SJ, Gabelt BT, Heideman W, Robinson JC, Hubbard WC, Kaufman PL: Indomethacin and epinephrine effects on outflow facility and cyclic adenosine monophosphate formation in monkeys. Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 1996, 37:1348-1359. Epinephrine-induced increase in outflow facility is partially inhibited by the simultaneous administration of indomethacin in living monkey eyes. Analysis of trabecular meshwork cultures shows that only part of this effect can be explained by i ndomethacin-induced decrease of the stimulation of cAMP production by epinephrine.
