Crossmatch-compatible platelets improve • corrected count increments in patients who are refractory to randomly selected platelets
-
Gelb AB, Leavitt AD: Crossmatch-compatible platelets improve • corrected count increments In patients who are refractory to randomly selected platelets. Transfusion 1997, 37:624-630. A total of 475 crossmatch-compatible platelet transfusions were administered to 66 patients who were refractory to random donor platelets. In 59% of patients, the mean corrected platelet count increment increased by at least 7500.

Platelet-specific antibodies in transfused • patients
-
Uhrynowska M, Zupanska: Platelet-specific antibodies in transfused • patients. Eur J Haematol 1996, 56:248-251. Using three sensitive laboratory methods, the authors detected platelet-reactive antibodies in 30.8% of transfused patients with hematologic diseases. This rate of alloimmunization compares with 20% to 70% reported by others.

HLA class I• eluted platelets as an alternative to HLA-matched platelets
-
Novotny VMJ, Huizinga TWJ, van Doom R, Briët E, Brand A: HLA class I• eluted platelets as an alternative to HLA-matched platelets. Transfusion 1996, 36:438-444. Using citric acid, the authors decreased HLA expression on human platelets while preserving platelet-specific glycoproteins. Three of four patients transfused with HLA-eluted platelets had satisfactory outcomes. A fourth patient developed chills after the transfusion.

HLA reduced platelets to overcome platelet refractoriness: • can lemons help ?

Sirchia G: HLA reduced platelets to overcome platelet refractoriness: • can lemons help [editorial]? Transfusion 1996, 36:388-391. This editorial includes a report of 52 crossmatch-compatible platelet transfusions in 19 refractory patients, with satisfactory post-transfusion corrected platelet count increments in 65%. A trial of acid-treated platelets resulted in 20% to 30% platelet loss. Tests to predict viability showed decreased but acceptable results.
