This is one of the few cases showing results of prednisone. Prednisone was continued with a slow taper, resolving the patient's dysphagia and leading to normal esophageal manometry findings after 1 month.
50. Blitzer A, Brin M: Use of botulinum toxin for diagnosis and management of cricopharyngeal achalasia. Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 1997, 116:328-330. A botulinum toxin injection into the hyperfunctional (spasming) cricopharyngeus muscle of six patients was safe and effective in improving symptoms of dysphagia. Botulinum toxin injection may be useful in identifying patients who may benefit from a cricopharyngeal myotomy as well as measuring the significance of cricopharyngeal spasms relative to a patient's dysphagia symptoms.
