These authors report a much higher prevalence of positive patch tests than in any previous study.

Contact Dermatitis 1996, 35:27-32. Comparison of contact allergy reactions to mites, tree and grass aeroallergens, and prick and intradermal testing showed no correlation. Similarly, positive allergy patch tests to standard allergens such as nickel chromates and cobalt showed no correlation with immediate hypersensitivity testing. Further, there was no increased likelihood of positive patch tests in children with atopic dermatitis.
17. de Waard-VanDer Speck F, Oranje AR: Purpura caused by Emla is of toxic origin. Contact Dermatitis 1997, 36:52. An investigation of contact purpura that mimicked ACD resulted in negative patch tests in all children studied. This was determined not to be a true contact allergy but rather a toxic response to prolonged contact of the anesthetic cream under occlusion.
