25. Frank SM, Fleisher LA, Breslow MJ, Higgins MS, Olson KF, Kelly S, Beattie C: Perioperative maintenance of normothermia reduces the incidence of morbid cardiac events. JAMA 1997, 277:1127-1134. A rigorously designed randomized controlled trial that showed a 55% reduction in perioperative cardiac morbidity when even mild hypothermia was avoided by using forced-air warming covers. The average age of the patients was 71 years; the mean core temperature after surgery was 36.7 C in the normothermic group versus 35.4 C in the control individuals.
