43. "Gradient shape" refers to the rate of change of the solvent composition in a given program step. Thus, a linear gradient (i.e. 1.0) varies linearly with time; a negative gradient (i.e. -9.0) involves a solvent program that changes very quickly initially but then changes slowly towards the end of that program step; a positive gradient (i.e. > 1.0) is the opposite of a negative gradient.
