Evidence that the Initial up-regulation of phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis in free cholesterol-loaded macrophages is an adaptive response that prevents cholesterol-induced cellular necrosis. Proposed role of an eventual failure of this response in foam cell necrosis in advanced atherosclerosis
-
Tabas I, Marathe S, Keesler GA, Beatini N, Shiratori Y: Evidence that the Initial up-regulation of phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis in free cholesterol-loaded macrophages is an adaptive response that prevents cholesterol-induced cellular necrosis. Proposed role of an eventual failure of this response in foam cell necrosis in advanced atherosclerosis. J Biol Chem 1996, 271:22773-22781. This article presents the first evidence that the increase in PC biosynthesis in FC loaded macrophages helps prevent FC-mediated cytotoxicity. The strongest data are those in which blunting of the PC response is shown to cause a rise in the cellular FC:PL ratio and then cellular necrosis.
