-3. The reference pressure divided by 1000 dbar is denoted by n. The depth of the potential density anomaly surface is approximated by its pressure, because 1 dbar ∼ 1 m.

Because the detailed signature of the recirculation was created by isobars contoured between 25 and 50 dbar, it is important to note that the standard errors for the pressure field on this surface are∼10 to 20 dbar for the western North Atlantic.

An earlier analysis of a collection of historical hydrographic lines [J. L. Reid, Prog. Oceanogr. 33, 1 (1994)] showed a large-scale anticyclonic gyre in the general vicinity of the gyre shown in Fig. 1C. However, Reid's gyre and the one depicted in Fig. 1C have substantial differences in their vertical structure and horizontal substructure.

o is a constant potential density. The vertical derivative is computed locally over a nominal depth of 100 m. In an effort to approximate neutral surfaces [T. J. McDougall, J. Phys. Oceanogr. 17, 1950 (1987)], potential vorticity was also calculated as f/h, where h is the distance between two locally referenced isopycnals. The differences in the two methods were insignificant to the results of this study; that is, the region and extent of homogenization were the same with either calculation.
