9. Samples of (R, S)-ibuprofen and (S)-ibuprofen were provided by the Albemarle Corp., Baton Rouge, LA. The optical purity of the (S)-ibuprofen sample was reported to be 99.8% S-isomer (determined chromatographically).

11. Solids were analyzed on a Siemens D-500 X-ray powder diffractometer-Kristalloflex with an IBM-compatible interface and DIFFRAC AT software (SOCABIM, 1994) using Cu Kα radiation (1.5046 A). Slits I and II were set at 1° and the radiation was electronically filtered by a Kevex Psi Peltier cooled silicon detector with slits III at 1° and IV at 0.15°. A continuous θ-2θ scan at 0.5°/min (2.4 s, 0.02° per step) from 5.2° to 6.3° was used.
