Filgrastim (rhuG-CSF) enhances ciprofloxacin uptake and bactericidal activity of human neutrophils in vitro
-
McKenna PJ, Nelson S, Andresen J: Filgrastim (rhuG-CSF) enhances ciprofloxacin uptake and bactericidal activity of human neutrophils in vitro [abstract]. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1996, 153:A535. The authors report that G-CSF acts synergistically with ciprofloxacin in enhancing PMN bactericidal activity, by promoting PMN uptake of ciprofloxacin. A possible consequence of this phenomenon is enhanced transport of antibiotics to infectious sites by PMNs.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor improves survival rate and reduces concentrations of bacteria, endotoxin, tumor necrosis factor, and endothelin-1 in fulminant intra-abdominal sepsis in rats
-
Lundblad R, Nesland JM, Giercksky K: Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor improves survival rate and reduces concentrations of bacteria, endotoxin, tumor necrosis factor, and endothelin-1 in fulminant intra-abdominal sepsis in rats. Crit Care Med 1996, 24:820-826. A model of peritonitis that reports enhanced survival in G-CSF-treated animals. In addition, G-CSF-treated septic animals had a decrease in plasma levels of bacteria, tumor necrosis factor, and endothelin-1. There were no adverse effects due to G-CSF therapy.

Effect of recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor on neutrophil kinetics in normal young and elderly humans
-
Price TH, Chatta GS, Dale DC: Effect of recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor on neutrophil kinetics in normal young and elderly humans. Blood 1996, 88:335-340. An important study designed to further characterize PMN kinetics following G-CSF treatment and to examine the safety and efficacy of G-CSF therapy in the elderly. Administration of G-CSF to elderly subjects resulted in the same effects on PMN kinetics as in young subjects (neutrophilia, an increase in marrow neutrophil mitotic pool size, and a decrease in marrow neutrophil postmitotic pool size). In addition, no deleterious effects due to G-CSF treatment were observed in either group.

Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1996, 153:A535. A report of a phase III trial of 756 hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia designed to examine the safety and effectiveness of G-CSF treatment.
