Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1996, 153:A535. The authors report that G-CSF acts synergistically with ciprofloxacin in enhancing PMN bactericidal activity, by promoting PMN uptake of ciprofloxacin. A possible consequence of this phenomenon is enhanced transport of antibiotics to infectious sites by PMNs.

An important study designed to further characterize PMN kinetics following G-CSF treatment and to examine the safety and efficacy of G-CSF therapy in the elderly. Administration of G-CSF to elderly subjects resulted in the same effects on PMN kinetics as in young subjects (neutrophilia, an increase in marrow neutrophil mitotic pool size, and a decrease in marrow neutrophil postmitotic pool size). In addition, no deleterious effects due to G-CSF treatment were observed in either group.

Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1996, 153:A535. A report of a phase III trial of 756 hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia designed to examine the safety and effectiveness of G-CSF treatment.
