-

Gastroenterology 1997, 112:707-715. A maximum five year follow-up study of patients treated with 30-90 mg lansoprazole. This therapy induced a worsening chronic active inflammation in non-antrectomized patients with H. pylori infection, which within the first 5 years of treatment led to more than double (21-46%) the prevalence of corpus mucosal atrophy.

Atrophic gastritis and Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with reflux esophagitis treated with omeprazole or fundoplication

N Engl J Med 1996, 334:1018-1022. Long term treatment with proton pump inhibitors may accelerate the development of atrophic gastritis in H. pylori positive GERD patients; this is not the case for H. pylori negative patients or H. pylori positive patients treated with fundoplication. This article is the major argument in favour of diagnosing and treating H. pylori in patients treated with long term proton pump inhibitors.
