    • The sponge is dark grey in colour and whitish inside. It lived almost buried in the sandy bottom, with the emerging parts covered by overgrowing organisms and just the oscules completely free. A highly developed network of secondary spongin fibres, 20-45 um thick, forms its skeletal frame, making the sponge elastic. These fibres are covered by small darker dots giving a rusty shade to the network. No cored, primary fibres are detectable in the studied specimen. The general construction of the sponge is cavernous and the cavities-often superficial- are covered by thin dermal membranes with several inclusions (mostly spicules from other sponges and debris). According to the external morphology and skeletal characteristics the sponge may be attributed to the genus Hippospongia Schulze, 1879, but the available material does not allow a specific identification.
