J Neurosurg 1996, 84:629-633. This is a case control study of patients with hydrocephalus caused by cysticercotic arachnoiditis who required the insertion of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Patients were chronically treated with prednisone and control individuals received no therapy. At the end of the follow up, 13% of the patients and 60% of the control individuals required surgical shunt revisions, suggesting that prednisone therapy reduced the rate of shunt dysfunctions in these patients.
