17. The pilot study included 103 women with clandestine abortion complications and 103 controls. The finding of 22 per cent of women living with a permanent partner among cases and a difference of 12.5 per cent between groups was used to estimate a sample size of 382 per group. The alpha and beta errors were set at 5 per cent.
18. The program for data entry as well as all digitation were done with the DE module (data entry) of the SPSS-PC+ (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Digitation was carried out twice, on different occasions and by different persons. The analysis of frequencies allowed the identification and correction of errors resulting from the inadequate fifling-in of the questionnaires (logic errors) and of wrong digitation. The chisquare was used to evaluate association between the variables in the contingency tables. Only differences in which the value of p was lower than 0.05 were considered significant.
