Comparison of ceftriaxone and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for acute otitis media
-
Barnett ED, Teele DW, Klein JO, Cabral HJ, Kharasch SJ, and The Greater Boston Otitis Media Study Group: Comparison of ceftriaxone and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for acute otitis media. Pediatrics 1997, 99:23-28. The Boston Otitis Media Study Group is a consortium of private offices, a hospital-based clinic, and a neighborhood health center that since 1975, in affiliation with faculty at Boston University, have conducted a series of studies on the treatment and outcome of otitis media. In their most recent effort, they compare a 10-day course of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole to a single intramuscular injection of ceftriaxone. This study is the largest to show no difference between oral antibiotic therapy and a shot of ceftriaxone.

The delivery of immunizations and other preventive services in private practices
-
Bordley WC, Margolis PA, Lannon CM: The delivery of immunizations and other preventive services in private practices. Pediatrics 1996, 97:467-473. These North Carolina investigators have taken on the task of improving the quality of preventive health care in pediatric practice. In this study of 15 practices, practice immunization rates averaged 61% at 2 years of age. Rates of screening for anemia, tuberculosis, and lead poisoning were at 68%, 57%, and 3%, respectively. The authors suggest that private practices may not be organized optimally to deliver preventive services.
