    • The higher molecular weight impurity could be related to some aging phenomenon. Samples of 2a analyzed by GPC several months after synthesis displayed this same behavior. The observations suggest some sort of strong, but discrete aggregation as a result of slow decomposition or covalent coupling. This type of Chromatographic behavior was not observed in either of the precursor monodendrons (t-butyl capped and t-butyl ester capped).

    • A solution phase hydrolysis of 2a to 2b was attempted using trifluoroacetic acid in dichloromethane. GPC of the resulting product did show a broad elution profile indicating high large sized components. The GPC trace also showed lower molecular weight components. Overall, the trace was less clean than that of 2b prepared by the solid-state thermolysis. The utility of the solution phase procedure was questioned since the reaction required the use of solvents and reagents thus opening the possibility for product contamination. In addition, potential solubility problems in dendrimers with large hydrophilic domains made this procedure unattractive.
