Predictive value of amniotic fluid index for oligohydramnios in patients with prolonged pregnancies
-
O'Reilly-Green CP, Divon M: Predictive value of amniotic fluid index for oligohydramnios in patients with prolonged pregnancies. J Maternal-Fetal Med 1996, 5:218-226. This paper reports a study of the amniotic fluid index as a predictor of amniotic fluid volume and neonatal outcome. As a predictor of amniotic fluid volume, the amniotic fluid index was shown to have a 50% false-positive rate and a 15% false-negative rate. It was not found to be a useful predictor of neonatal outcome, but this is in disagreement with other findings in the literature.

Perinatal mortality in term and post-term births
-
Fabre E, de Aguero RG, de Augustin JL, Tajada M, Repolles S, Sanz A: Perinatal mortality in term and post-term births. J Perinat Med 1996, 24:163-169. This was a population-based retrospective study of 662015 births in Spain in selected years between 1980 and 1992. There was a time trend of decreasing relative risk of perinatal mortality in post-term compared with term births. During the same time period, the incidence of post-term birth in the same population fell from 8.1 to 5.0 indicating possibly increased rates of induction and increased accuracy in pregnancy dating.

Post-term birth risk-factors and outcomes in a 10-year cohort of Norwegian births
-
Campbell MK, Ostbye T, Irgens LM: Post-term birth risk-factors and outcomes in a 10-year cohort of Norwegian births. Obstet Gynecol 1997, 89:543-548. This was a population-based study of a 10-year cohort of all post-term and term births in Norway. Post-term births were not shown to be at significantly increased risk of perinatal death. Multivariate analysis of the post-term cohort revealed that small fetal size was the factor associated with the greatest risk of perinatal death. Analysis of intrapartum complications revealed increased risk of shoulder dystocia associated with larger fetal size. Increased risks of labor dysfunction and obstetrical trauma were shown to be associated with both larger fetal size and post-term status independently. Fetal distress was shown to be higher in post-term births and also in small-for-gestation fetuses.

Maternal anxiety and depression - The experience of prolonged pregnancy
-
Sarkar PK, Hill L: Maternal anxiety and depression - the experience of prolonged pregnancy. J Obstet Gynecol 1996, 16:488-492. This is a study of 51 women with post-term pregnancies and 54 women with term pregnancies. Findings indicated that levels of depression were low and were similar for the two groups. However, women with post-term pregnancy exhibited significantly higher levels of both state (current) anxiety and trait (general) anxiety.
