This is the first study demonstrating nerve fibers in articular cartilage. Neurokinin A- and CGRP-immunoreactive fibers were found in the outer layer of articular cartilage of the rat knee joint. The findings may reflect a neurogenic pathway in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis.

The authors speculate that the endplates and vertebral bodies are the probable sources of low back pain.
