Statement on self-monitoring of peak expiratory flow in the investigation of occupational asthma
-
Moscato G, Godnic-Cvar J, Maestrelli P: Statement on self-monitoring of peak expiratory flow in the investigation of occupational asthma. J Allergy Clin Immunol 1995, 96:295-301. A position statement on the use of self-monitoring of PEF for diagnosing and monitoring occupational asthma. PEF is a reliable method for confirming the relationship between occupational exposure and asthma that is simple and safe but is time consuming and requires collaboration and honesty on the part of the subject. Recommendations for further studies to improve the reliability and applicability of the technique are given.

Dairy farmers have increased methacholine bronchial responsiveness independent of sensitization to mold antigens
-
Amishima M, Munakata M, Ohtsuka Y, Satoh A, Takahashi T, Taguchi H, Nasuhara Y, Ohe M, Doi I, Homma Y: Dairy farmers have increased methacholine bronchial responsiveness independent of sensitization to mold antigens. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1995, 151:1794-1798. Airway hyperresponsiveness in dairy farmers was not associated with a history of farmer's lung disease or serum antibody to Microspora faeni or Thermoactinomyces vulgaris, suggesting that the phenomenon is due to the occupational environment of diary farming.

Vocal cord dysfunction masquerading as exercise-induced asthma
-
McFadden ER, Zawadski DK: Vocal cord dysfunction masquerading as exercise-induced asthma. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1996, 153:942-947. Seven elite athletes had psychogenic vocal cord dysfunction manifested as acute dyspnea during sporting competition. These individuals had clinical findings that distinguished them from asthmatic patients, including onset of symptoms during exercise, inconsistent symptoms after exposure to identical stimuli, and poor therapeutic and prophylactic response to asthma medications.
