By 1849 there were twelve teaching hospitals in London: the two medieval foundations, St. Bartholomew's and St. Thomas's, five hospitals founded in the eighteenth century, the Westminster, St. George's, Guy's, the London, and the Middlesex, and five founded in the nineteenth century, the Royal Free, University College, Charing Cross, King's College, and St. Mary's Hospitals. All were voluntary hospitals dispensing charity to the lame and sick poor.
