note
-
St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, established the first school in Florida in 1885, but regular classes were not admitted until the late 18905. The first training school in Mississippi opened in 1898 at the Charity Hospital in Natchez. Although a few urban centers in the South had established schools of nursing before 1900, the majority of communities in the study area did not develop trained nursing programs until after 1900.
