    • The first encounter with Europa on 19 December 1996 occurred at 06:52:57.7 UTC (spacecraft time) at an altitude of 692 km (above the reference sphere), a latitude φ = -1.68° and a longitude λ= 323.16° (east longitude). The second encounter on 20 February 1997 occurred at 17:06:10.2 UTC at an altitude of 586 km, a latitude φ = -17.01° and a longitude λ = 35.31° (east longitude).

    • note
    • This experiment was coordinated at JPL by the Radio Science Systems Group under R. G. Herrera and S. Asmar. The radio Doppler data were generated with the support of the Telecommunications and Mission Operations Directorate and the Deep Space Network (DSN). The data analysis depended on the availability of software and personnel of the Galileo Project Navigation Team, W. E. Kirhofer, Team Leader. This work was sponsored by the Galileo Project and was performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. G.S. and W.B.M. acknowledge support by grants from NASA through the Galileo Project at JPL and the Planetary Geology and Geophysics Program.
