[4] 5,6-Dimethyl-3-nitro-2(1H)pyridone (6a) has been synthesized by condensation of the sodium salt of 2-methyl-3-oxobutanal and ethyl nitroacetate in the presence of piperazinium acetate (yield 82%) following the procedure reported by R.P. Mariella (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 69 (1950) 2670). 5-Methyl-3-nitro-2-(1H)pyridone (6b) has been obtained following the procedure reported by G.R. Lappin and F.B. Slezak, (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 72 (1950) 2806).
