One of the reviewers has suggested that the very low light scattaering intensity observed for the 'unimers' at pH 2 could be due to the "polyelectrolyte effect". Thus, the copolymer chains may be present as micelles (rather than unimers, as suggested in the text), and inter-chain repulsion may cause the micellar corona to be so diffuse that very littel scattering is detected. In principle, static light scattering experiments as a function of added salt might allow us to distinguish between these two situations, but unfortunately our He-Ne laser-based light scattering insturment is not powerful enough to perform these experiments.
