Selective mono-alkylation (91% yield) of a primary diamine with one equiv. of propanesultone in polar, aprotic solvents was described in a Japanese patent (79 36, 214). However, we found these conditions to be unacceptably slow, perhaps because our nucleophile is a hindered secondary amine.
