    • In two recent reports in which VCSEL operation has been claimed, no such reduction in spontaneous emission linewidth has been unexplicably seen; instead linewidths of several tens of meV have been reported even at cryogenic temperatures. It is therefore unclear what role is played by the vertical cavity in the papers by Floyd et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 66 (1995) 2929] and Yokogawa et al. [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 34 (1995) L751].
