    • Hydroxamic acids have been known for over a century. The term hydroxamic acid is a common trivial name which conveniently represents this group of compounds because of the uncertainty in structure. However, the author prefers to use a descriptive and systematic name to permit only one structural formula to be written, such as an N-hydroxy or an N-alkoxyamide. The author will strive as far as possible to use this systematic nomenclature in this text, but unavoidably, there will be some crossing between systems
