20. Throughout this paper, we identify Δs with the forward nucleon matrix element of the strange-quark axial vector current. This matrix element appears in the analysis of polarized deep-inelastic scattering using the operator product expansion. In the quark-parton model, it has the interpretation as the ss̄ contribution to the nucleon's spin. The same matrix element, but renormalized at a different scale and evaluated at nonzero momentum transfer, appears in the QE neutrino scattering cross section. This point is discussed further in Sec. VI.
