    • Geographers disagree on the exact boundaries of the Russian Far East. Some limit the region to areas affected by the monsoon climate and the Pacific Ocean - Primorskiy, Khabarovsk, Amur, Sakhalin, Magadan, Chukotka and Kamchatka. Others, defining the RFE according to its economic ties with the Pacific Rim, include the Republic of Yakutia and Chita Oblast. We have chosen the latter definition.

    • In the late 1960s, the Soviet government initiated a number of development projects in coordination with the Japanese government and Japanese trading companies. These agreements provided Japan with raw materials in exchange for machinery and low-interest loans. The first agreement was the KS Sangyo project, signed in 1968. Two more KS Sangyo agreements followed in the 1970s. The fourth KS Sangyo agreement is currently under negotiation.
